Curse the Dawn Cassandra Palmer Karen Chance Books
SummaryCassandra Palmer may be the all-powerful Pythia now, but that doesn't mean people have stopped trying to kill her. Most of the supernatural power players don't want the independent minded Cassie as chief clairvoyant--and they'll stop at nothing to see her six feet under.
The Vampire Senate does support Cassie in her position, but their protection comes with a price: an alliance with the sexy master vampire Mircea, who has claimed Cassie as his own.
But even the vampires will have trouble keeping Cassie alive now that the self-styled god Apollo, the source of the Pythia's power, has it in for her in a big way. To save her life--and the world--Cassie's going to have to face down her creator once and for all...
The Good
I am actually smiling as I write this review. From the first few sentences of Curse the Dawn, I knew this was going to be a good book. I usually don't do this but I have to share the beginning of chapter one with you:
Stalking a time traveler is hard work, even if you are one. Especially when said traveler totally had you made. "Can we talk?" I screamed as I dodged behind a column to avoid a spray of bullets.
The women hunting me through the cellar slung her flashlight beam in my direction. "Sure," she said amiably. "Hold still for a second."
Yeah, right.
This is why I love Chance's books so much. She knows how to grab a reader's attention from the get-go. The action was super intense from beginning to end, and I found it hard to physically put down the book.
As always, we have Cassie. The adorable heroine who kicks ass and takes names. She may be new to this whole powerhouse Pythia thing, but she doesn't take crap from no one. Mircea is as sexy as ever. Though his constant arrogance may be astounding, you can't help but like him. And our hilarious Prikin is there as well. Powerful war-mag, sexy in his own right, and secretly in love with Cassie (I hope). I am happy to see way more Pritkin in this book. He is by far one of the most interesting characters I know. His and Cassie's interactions make this book.
I could barely stop laughing half the time because Chance knows how to write a great dialogue. Each character has their own sense of humor that can keep me entertained for hours.
The Bad
Sometimes Cassie's constant complaining can be annoying. The non-stop action is fun and all but it may have been just a smidge too much. I need to breath every once and a while. I would have liked to seen a little more character development instead of so much action.
The Snuggly
We get a sex scene and some nice foreplay as well. Nothing overdone.
Overall
I really did enjoy this book and would recommend it to other urban fantasy and paranormal romance lovers. It was fast-paced. Had a whole bunch of Pirtkin. It kept me entertained.

Curse the Dawn Cassandra Palmer Karen Chance Books Reviews
Cassie Palmer returns just where she left off and the action is just as hot and fast as usual. I love this world and the creatures that inhabit it. Cassie just can't figure out what is going on, only that the Senate and the Circle want to kill or capture her. She is the new Pythia but where are the directions? She has not been trained and has no idea what powers she has.
Mircea, the powerful vampire, who has claimed her, wants to protect her, but she is never where he leaves her while he tries to arrange a meeting between the Senate of Vampires and the Silver Circle of Mages. She finds adventure after adventure and most of the time it is only her and Pritkin against unnumbered adversaries.
SPOILERS AHEAD
First a ley line rupture's and MAGIC's headquarters are destroyed and she must search the devestation for Raph, a vampire who helped raise her.
Then the magic children under her protection are being hauled in by the Silver Circle.
Last but not least, Appollo has decided now is a good time to try to defeat the Mages and return to Earth.
So many things are happening and she has no control of any of them. As with the other books she takes it as it comes and does her best to just stay alive.
I love these books do not miss this one and please get the others first. These are some of the best Urban Fantasies out there.
Totally enjoyed this book, especially the interplay of drama with humor. Have reread each of the books at least twice and find I love the often sensual, tender and sometimes funny interaction of Cassie with her vampire and her friend, Pritkin. Can't wait for the next book.
I find myself conflicted about this book - actually my feelings reflect how I feel about the whole series so far. There are episodes in this book that are brilliant. I love the variety of characters. They are funny, courageous, loyal and distinct. What I don't like is that some of the storylines introduced in Book 1, Touch the Dark, are still yet to be resolved. Cassie is a reluctant Pythia - the Chief Clairvoyant for the Magic World. She is the consort to Master Vampire, Mircea and her ever-present, reluctant companion is John Pritkin, war mage extraordinaire. Her ascension to this position is is unusual and is thus, her legitimacy is constantly being challenged.
The second half of this book makes the entire series worthwhile. There are genuinely, funny and creative situations .
This is also, for me, the first book where we begin to learn more about the principle characters - their past, their concerns, their vulnerabilities. It is the first time that I started to really care about Mircea, Pritkin, and Cassie. It is enough to keep me reading and propel me to the next book.
I've loved this series from the beginning, and this book didn't disappoint. Like another reviewer said, I'd love to see them turned into a television series. All of the winning elements are there...come on, HBO and Showtime!
Cassie is still evolving, which I always like to see. The oh-so-interesting state of her love life has me whining for the next book already. I think that her choice is even harder than Sookie's...I mean, how can a girl choose between a devoted, powerful, rich, super hot Romanian vampire and, well...an equally hot, rugged, BRITISH (yay for the accent!), equally powerful half sex demon wizard?
Hmmm...when put that way, I know what I'd choose. Sigh.
Oh, and the tie-in with her Midnight's Daughter series is a nice touch. It had me wanting to shake Cassie and tell her to stop being so suspicious.
