Shadow Edge A Night Prowler Novel JT Geissinger Books Reviews
There really wasn't anything special about this book.
SYNOPSIS The Ikati are an ancient race of shifters. In human form, they are ethereally beautiful, but their "natural" form is that of a panther. The most Gifted can also shift into a mist-like vapor. Ikati have a quasi-feudal hierarchy, but all Ikati are subject to a set of archaic Laws.
Jenna is a renegade Ikati. Her father was a powerful Alpha, but he committed treason by breaking one of the Laws by mating with a human and producing a child. He was executed when Jenna was a child, and Jenna has been hiding ever since in an effort to remain free of Ikati rule.
Leander is the Alpha of one of the four remaining Ikati strongholds. He seeks out Jenna in order to discover if she has retained any of the shifter Gifts from her father's bloodline. He finds Jenna and brings her back to his stronghold, falling in love with her in the process. However, Jenna's Gifts are stronger than anyone had imagined, and the Laws of the Ikati may threaten both her freedom and her life.
REVIEW The characters in a paranormal romance are supposed to be supernaturally beautiful and gifted. I get that, and usually I like it. However, throughout the book, anyone who isn't Ikati is considered inferior - not just in looks and lack of Gifts, but in every way. Jenna is supposed to be different, because she is half-human and supposedly has a better image of humans. Unfortunately, the reader really never sees this, and instead is regaled repeatedly about the attributes of this superior race.
The real question is, "What attributes?" Yes, they are very pretty. Yes, they can shift. This gives them an advantage over humans in a bar brawl, but doesn't inherently make them superior. As for the Gifts they have, they are rarely in play at all during the story. In fact, the Ikati who have them seemed almost unwilling to use them. Furthermore, Leander is supposed to be highly gifted, but the reader is never told HOW he is Gifted beyond the ability to vaporize, which really doesn't seem all that uncommon.
As for Geissinger's "poetic" writing style - yes, there are some nicely constructed phrases in the novel. But there is also a bunch of purple prose. A lovely use of language means little when the characters are generally two-dimensional and the conflict only superficially explained. (No offense, but if this all-powerful sets of Ikati Laws are so important, why aren't they a little more defined?)
So why the three stars? Because it was average. It was generally well written with a good premise and excellent editing. I'm also a sucker for damsel-in-distress-but-still-strong-female-lead storylines. If you've already read everything by Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, and Susan Ee, reading this book is a way to pass the time until something better comes out.
This was a really enjoyable easy read. Although it is a modern fantasy, there is no mistaking that it's also a romance as the relationship between Jenna and Leander is a heavy theme throughout the book. Our main female, Jenna, is not only beautiful, but blessed with supernatural abilities that she's never really understood. In comes Leander, a hotter than hell male who is the leader of his colony of Ikati, a breed of shifters that have additional supernatural abilities, depending on the particular Gifts of each individual. Leander is sent to find out if Jenna can shift as she's of mixed blood and is taken with her immediately. The plot then consists of Jenna finding out about her heritage, abilities, history and the male-dominated Ikati world.
I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because I would have liked a bit more of an expansion on the threat to the Ikati. I get that there are other books that follow this one, but there was an elaborate description on Jenna learning about what she is and the Ikati being a secret species, then all of a sudden there's a threat to their way of life. This is solved to a degree but then the ending is pretty quick after not too much of a build up. I would have liked this to be dragged out for a bit or the ending to be less brief to give the book a bit more depth. There was also a bit of back and forth between Jenna and Leander, i.e. will they or won't they work everything out. Also be warned - if you aren't a found of patriarchal societies, give this a miss as the male-dominated theme runs throughout this book and frustrated me at several points. Yeah, it's fiction, but that doesn't mean it can't annoy me.
Overall, I really liked this book and will probably read the next ones eventually. I've had a quick look over them and noticed they are told from the point of view of other characters in the novel. I really liked Leander and Jenna so I'm not as keen to rush out and buy the books to continue the story as I probably would have preferred the ongoing story line to remain with them.
I'm very torn about this book. The world building is incredible and extremely interesting. But there are just some elements that make my skin crawl. The society is extremely patriarchal in the worst sense, but that's generally written as a bad thing, so ok. Plus there's strong hints the heroine is going to tear it all down, which I'm 100% on board with. Then there's the romance. Or "romance". He's constantly forcing her into physical things, even when she SAYS NO, and it's written as if it's supposed up be sexy. Ew my dudes. Super ew. Like his animal magnetism is just so strong she can't help but want it, even if she protests. Do you know what that is? That's rape culture. Can we please stop selling that as a good thing? Pretty please?
So I'm torn. Part of me wants to see her burn the barbaric patriarchy to the ground, because I'll never get tired of that. But I also don't want to read anymore sickening rape culture crap. Conundrums.
