The research is impeccable, giving a clear view of this unusual woman whose life would otherwise been left in obscurity. A woman who meticulously kept her papers and correspondence gives us a rare glimpse into life in Vilna at a turbulent time in history. I have great respect for this young author, whom I was fortunate to meet, and look forward to reading her next work.

Epistolophilia Writing the Life of Ona Simaite Julija Sukys 9780803236325 Books Reviews

This is an extraordinarly well written book, with a level of research which is clearly superior to most. This book will drive you to ensure that your life is truly a contribution as well, and leave you thirsty for more work by the same author. Another brilliant Canadian. A perfect read for any occasion.
It meant a lot to me because my family was destroyed by the the Soviets....Those that feel socialism/communism are good, should read this book to enlighten themselves about the proletariat heaven.
This compelling book is about two extraordinary women its subject, Ona Simaite, a librarian who quietly and heroically assisted the people in the wartime ghetto of Vilnius, and its author, Julija Sukys, who follows the trail of her heroine through Lithuania and France while painstakingly extracting telling entries from mountains of letters and diaries. In the case of Simaite it is a story of both exceptional bravery and quotidian activities. In the case of Sukys it is the quite personal story of first discovering, and then writing, the ordinary yet remarkable life of her countryman and fellow epistophile. Excellent!
Julija Sukys thoughtfully illuminates the life of Ona Simaite, an important, interesting, and complex woman. Sukys examines the many letters Simate wrote throughout her lifetime and intersperses these with careful historical research and insightful analysis. Sukys places herself gracefully into the research process--her personal observations do much to make this an easily readable and thought-provoking book.
Ona Simaite (pronounced Ah-na Shi-may-teh), a Righteous Gentile who saved the lives of many Lithuanian Jewish people during the Holocaust, really ought to be a lot better known than she is. The problem, as Sukys notes in this biography, is that most of the primary sources about Simaite and most of her own writings (she was an astonishingly prolific letter-writer, sometimes composing more than twenty a day) are in Lithuanian, and only about three million people can speak/read the language.

If you're looking for thrilling tales of Ona Simaite's heroic lifesaving actions during World War II, you will probably feel disappointed by this book. Sukys chose to focus on Simaite's entire life rather than those few years, and there was never a lot of information about her lifesaving efforts to begin with. For her own safety and for those she helped, Simaite would deliberately forget names and faces. The exact number of people she saved isn't known, other than that it was a large one.

I see this book being in the "woman's studies" subject as in the history and Holocaust/World War II subjects. As Sukys points out, Simaite did not have a very happy life, particularly in her old age (she was in exile in France, very lonely and living in great poverty; she died in a nursing home that sounded like a dump), and a large part of that was because of the limitations imposed on her due to her gender and her unmarried status. But her being a woman probably helped when it came to saving Jewish people during the war.

This book could interest a lot of people, if they are of a scholarly bent.
Wonderfully well-researched account of a heroic woman. A great teaching resource for professors of writing who want their students to learn how to speak of a person without writing a hagiography.
